Wannier-like equation for the resonant cavity modes of locally perturbed photonic crystals

چکیده
In analogy to the Wannier equation for localized electronic impurity states in crystalline materials, a wave equation for the envelope of the resonant optical modes of local defects within two-dimensional periodic dielectric structures is derived. In the case of degenerate satellite extrema, this is generalized to a set of coupled Wannier-like equations for a multienvelope system. The localized Wannier envelope solutions are then used in conjunction with a group theoretical symmetry analysis to determine an approximate form for donor and acceptor modes in a hexagonal photonic crystal. For an effective harmonic potential formed by varying the filling fraction of the lattice, the localized resonant modes are explicitly calculated using the Wannier equation and symmetry analysis, and a comparison to exact numerically computed modes is presented.

Numerical Calculation of Resonant Frequencies and Modes of a Three-Atom Photonic Molecule and a Photonic Crystal in an External Cavity
In the present paper, resonant frequencies and modes of a three-atom photonic molecule and a photonic crystal placed within a cavity are numerically calculated. First, governing formulation in transverse electric field mode (TE) is obtained using Maxwell equations. Then, an algorithm based on a finite difference scheme and matrix algebra is presented. The algorithm is then implemented in a comp...

متن کاملSemianalytic Methods for Studying Localized Modes Within Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystals
The design of photonic crystal (PC) based optical elements has often relied on numerical simulations using methods such as finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) [6, 7]. While FDTD provides a wealth of detailed information about the system under consideration, it has the drawback of being rather computationally intensive and time consuming. In this chapter, I detail two approximate analytic metho...
متن کاملA New Method for Calculating Propagation Modes of a One Dimensional Photonic Crystal (RESEARCH NOTE)
Photonic band-gap (PBG) crystals offer new dimensions of freedom in controlling propagation of electromagnetic waves. The existence of stop-bands in the transmission characteristic of these crystals makes them a suitable element for the realization of many useful microwave and optical subsystems. In this paper, we calculate the propagation constant of a one-dimensional (1-D) photonic crystal by...

An overmoded photonic crystal resonant cavity with two dimensional dielectric lattice structures is proposed and simulated. The dominant mode is a higher-order TM03-like at the frequency of 31.14 GHz, the fundamental mode and most other modes are not supported by the cavity. The structure would be potential for application in accelerator, gyrotron and klystron in Ka-band. DOI: 10.2529/PIERS0610...
